Daniel Layden

Research Associate

PhD Student in Rural Studies at the University of Guelph, SEDRD

Daniel is a PhD student in Rural Studies at the University of Guelph and a recipient of the McCall MacBain University of Guelph Resilient Rural Communities Scholarship. Their research examines the intersections of migration and social economics for equity-seeking populations, such as newcomers to Canada and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, with a focus on how systemic change can occur to support rural resilience. Drawing on social economics and Theory of Change, Daniel explores pathways for transformation in rural contexts that foster inclusive and sustainable livelihoods. As part of the HEAR Initiative, they work with longitudinal, community-level data to analyze rural migration patterns in relation to economic practices, health and well-being, and adaptation. Their work contributes to the initiative by centering historically marginalized narratives as critical to informing equity-driven policy grounded in the lived experiences of rural populations.
